Despite being born in England, Donald joined College Prospects of America to send out his resume to colleges for recruitment, and eventually accepted a scholarship to Northwestern University.
In 1999, he won the individual NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, breaking Tiger Woods’ score record. Donald turned professional in 2001 and earned his PGA Tour card for the 2002 season, making his debut at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

In March 2002, he won his first championship at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic. He became the 11th rookie in PGA Tour history to earn more than $1 million in his first year after a strong rookie season.
In 2005, he tied for third place in his debut Masters, his highest finish to that point. Luke Donald won his first and only World Golf Championship in 2011, defeating German Martin Kaymer 3-2 in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
He concluded 2011 with various honours, including PGA Player of the Year and European Tour Golfer of the Year, thanks to multiple wins during the year.
