Makiko: Meet Rui Hachimura’s Mother

Rui inherited his last name from his mother, Makiko, a Japanese by birth. The Japanese law for international marriage mainly requires a Japanese as the head of the family register to pass down their family name.

Hence, abiding by the rule, the Wizards player and his siblings took upon their mom’s last name as they were born and raised in Japan all along.

Given his upbringing, the eldest Hachimura is closer to his Japanese culture while he showed concern for the peaking BLM movement in 2020.

As an ode to his surname, Hachimura wears jersey number 8 as “Hachi” in Japanese means eight. Hachimura grew up in a big family of five under the care of his Beninese dad and an Asian mom.
