David Reichman, 32, fell and died as he crossed the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday, May 21 morning, according to New York officials. According to fire department spokeswoman Frank Dwyer, the runner was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The cause of the runner’s fall was unknown, while the nonprofit New York Road Runners stated it happened after the man finished the race.

“Our hearts go out to the runner’s family and those close to them,” said spokesperson Trina Singian.

According to Singian, medical personnel were stationed across the racecourse from start to finish. The company also worked with local officials and weather specialists to monitor weather conditions leading up to and during the event.
The temperature fluctuated from the mid-60s to the upper 70s during the race, which began at 7 a.m., according to Singian. A heat advisory was in force throughout New York City until 8 p.m. Saturday, warning that hot temperatures and heavy humidity could cause heat illnesses.
