Lilian Thuram retired from professional football in 2008, following a heart defect diagnosis.
He has since been involved in philanthropic and social initiatives, especially in the fight against racism and discrimination.
Thuram is one of the best defenders of his generation, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest French footballers of all time.
Having begun in AS Monaco in France, Thuram ended up playing for Parma in Italy, the Italian club, Juventus, Portugais de Fontainebleau, Melun, and Barcelona.

His time in Juventus saw him win the Serie A championships and qualified for the UEFA Champions League final.
Thuram also represented France in international matches, and helped his country win the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where he had scored two goals in the semifinal against Croatia.
Thuram retired, after winning 142 caps for France, making him the most-capped player in French football history at the time.
