Marion Sylvester Barber III was born on June 10, 1983, in Plymouth, Minnesota, United States. His parents are Marion Barber Jr and Karen Barber. His father Marion Barber Jr is a former New York Jets running back and he was the older brother of former Houston Texans safety Dominique Barber as well as Minnesota Golden Gophers linebacker Thomas Barber.

Marion Barber III attended Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota where he was active in football, baseball, and track.  He was a SuperPrep and PrepStar All-Midwest and consensus All-State honoree as a senior running back and as a defensive back.

Marion Barber III proceeded to theUniversity of Minnesota where he played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. There he was an All-Big Ten Conference selection in 2003. The Dallas Cowboys selected him in the fourth round, with the 109th overall selection, of the 2005 NFL Draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2007 during his six-year tenure with the Cowboys. He played for the Chicago Bears in 2011.

The official cause of death for Marion Barber III has not yet been revealed. Marion Barber III was found dead in Frisco, Texas, the United States in his apartment on June 1, 2022.
