Mark Shields, a longtime PBS news commentator known for his weekly political analysis, died at the age of 85.

Shields died of kidney failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Md. Before he retired in 2020, Shields provided thoughtful insights into the administration of six US presidents, on the Persian Gulf War, the Iran Contra affair and 9/11.

Shields was known for both his sense of humour and his expensive knowledge of American politics. Judy Woodruff, the anchor and managing editor of Newshour said in a tweet announcing his death.
Shields was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts on May 25, 1937. He was raised in an Irish Catholic family. He attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1959.
