Meera Syal is a British actress, comedian, and writer. While she was born on June 27, 1961, in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, her ethnic background is Indian.

Syal’s parents were immigrants from India, and she has often explored themes of cultural identity and the experiences of British Asians in her work. So, while her heritage is Indian, she holds British nationality.

Meera Syal rose to prominence as a member of the production team for Goodness Gracious Me and as Sanjeev’s grandmother, Ummi, in The Kumars at No. 42.

In addition to her work in comedy, Meera Syal has had a successful acting career in both film and television. She has appeared in movies such as “Bhaji on the Beach,” “Anita and Me,” and “Yesterday.” Syal has also had notable roles in TV shows like “Holby City” and “The Split.”

She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1997 New Year Honours and was named one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy by The Observer in 2003. In the 2015 New Year Honours, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to drama and literature.
