Melissa Caddick vanished in November 2020 amid an investigation by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) for carrying on a financial services business without holding an Australian Financial Services (AFS) licence.

Melissa Caddick’s parents admitted that their daughter also defrauded them. Barb and Ted Grimley, who are in their 80s, said in a statement filed in Federal Court that “Melissa dishonestly and fraudulently” used $1.187 million they gave her to buy a 37.37% stake in an Edgecliff penthouse purchased by their daughter for $2.55 million in late 2016.

According to their statement, after spending their entire married life in southern Sydney, their daughter encouraged them to relocate to the eastern suburbs “to be closer to Melissa, her husband, and son” beginning in 2012. According to the podcast Liar Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions, the Grimleys’ money was squandered on a $590,000 diamond ring, private jets in Aspen, and other lifestyle expenses by their daughter.

After months of speculation about her whereabouts, DNA testing confirmed that the partial human remains discovered on a beach on New South Wales South Coast in February 2021 were Caddick’s. After a coronial inquest in May 2023, the deputy state coroner declared Caddick deceased but was unable to determine how she died.
