Murray Stenson, a bartender legend in Seattle who helped launch the artisan cocktail boom across the country, has passed away.
His family confirmed Stenson’s passing to The Seattle Times on Friday night. He passed away on Friday morning at his Uptown apartment. He was 74.

During his career, Stenson, one of the most well-known figures in Seattle’s restaurant and bar scenes, worked in more than twenty bars, most notably twice at the Zig Zag Café behind Pike Place Market from 2000 to 2011.

The Last Word, a gin cocktail that has come to be associated with him, was one of the numerous pre-Prohibition era beverages he introduced to patrons there. He was also credited with teaching many bartenders how to prepare a perfect martini and other famous cocktails.
