Netflix, the leading video streaming platform, has released its viewership report for 2023, covering the period from January to December. According to the Netflix Engagement Report, consumers watched a staggering 183 billion hours of content on the platform throughout the year, with 90 billion hours watched in the second half of 2023 alone.

The report also highlighted the performance of the top 13 films produced in Africa. The ranking of these films was based on the total hours watched, divided by the runtime.
Interestingly, out of the 13 films ranked, 6 were from Nigeria, while 7 were from South Africa. No other African country was represented in the top 13.

The Nigerian film “The Black Book,” produced by Anakle and starring Richard Mofe-Damijoe and Sam Dede, was the most-watched African film on Netflix in 2023, with an impressive 28.3 million views.

The second and third spots were occupied by South African films, “Fatal Seduction” and “Unseen,” with 18.3 million and 18 million views, respectively.
Other notable African films on the list include the South African movie “Number Number” in fourth place with 10 million views, and the Nigerian film “Blood Vessel” in fifth place with 8.9 million views.

The sixth and seventh spots were taken by Nigerian films “Shanty Town” and “A Sunday Affair,” with 8.2 million and 7 million views, respectively.
The report also highlighted the performance of African series, with the South African series “Silverton Siege” and “Kings of Jo’burg” ranking 8th and 11th, respectively, and the Nigerian series “Young, Famous and African” ranking 12th.
In total, the combined top 13 African films and series on Netflix accumulated 126 million views, with 7 of the 13 being movies and the remaining 6 being series, predominantly from South Africa.
