From 2008 until 2017, she worked as an assistant coach under Dawn Staley in South Carolina. In 2017, she was a member of the Gamecocks’ title-winning team.

McCray-Penson won gold medals with the United States women’s basketball team at the Olympics in 1996 and 2000.

The 1996 team was instrumental in establishing the WNBA and the now-defunct American Basketball League. She won MVP honors in the ABL in 1997 while leading the Columbus Quest to a title before moving on to the WNBA.
McCray-Penson was a three-time All-Star for the Washington Mystics in that league.
She played until 2006, when she retired, after a brief appearance in San Antonio.
She spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky.
McCray-Penson then spent three seasons as the head coach at Old Dominion, where he went 24-6 in 2020.
She coached at Mississippi State for one year before stepping down due to health concerns. She returned to coaching at Rutgers last season.
McCray-Penson attended Tennessee from 1991 to 1995, where he was coached by Hall of Famer Pat Summitt.
During her junior and senior seasons with the Lady Vols, she was a two-time SEC Player of the Year and a two-time Kodak All-America selection.
She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. McCray-Penson is survived by her husband Thomas and son Thomas Jr.
