Okongwu was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised there before being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2020 NBA Draft.

He played one season with the Trojans at the University of Southern California from 2019 to 2020.
Okongwu made his NBA debut on January 15, 2021, against the Utah Jazz, compiling four points and five rebounds in 14 minutes.
Okongwu played an average of 12 minutes per game in his rookie season, averaging 4.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks.

As Okongwu grows used to the NBA, he has now been given a larger role for the Hawks, playing an average of over 20 minutes per game.
