He is also best known for being the main guitarist and co-founder of Los Angeles-based punk band The Germs. Drummer Dave Grohl later took over as the lead singer of the rock group Foo Fighters after Nirvana split up after frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide, and Smear joined on guitar. He left the band in 1997, returned in 2005 as a touring guitarist, and has been a regular member since 2010.
