Michael was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1943 before moving to work for the U.S. Department of Defense after college. He later met his first wife Patricia Sue, an elementary school teacher, in West Germany. They wed in 1968 and had two boys together, Todd and Clayton.

After serving in the Vietnam War, he began to write novels and newspaper columns about his experiences following his honorable discharge in 1971.

Patricia Sue Peterson married Michael Peterson when she was just 23 years old.
After he served in the US Marine Corps in Vietnam, Michael moved with Patty to Durham, North Carolina, where she got her master’s degree, and they welcomed their sons Clayton and Todd.
A little while later, the Peterson family moved to Germany when Patty got a job for the US Department of Defence. During their time in Germany, Patricia and Michael were linked to another staircase-related death.
