Cripps’ junior football career began in Northampton. Later, he moved to Perth to play for WAFL’s East Fremantle Football club. Additionally, he served as vice-captain of Western Australia at the 2013 AFL U-18 Championships. There he won a place on the All-Australian team for the tournament.

During the 2013 AFL National Draft, Carlton Football Club recruited Cripps. The next year, he made his professional debut in the Match against Melbourne during round 4. Unfortunately, he could only participate in one more match that season. This was due to facing multiple injuries.
At the beginning of the 2018 season, Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty were announced joint vice-captains of Carlton. He had a fantastic season in 2018. During this, he collected his second Carlton Best and Fairest award, All Australian honors, and came in second in AFL MVP voting. Cripps became the leading disputed possession winner in a single season with nearly 29 touches per game.
