Patrick French was a writer, historian, and academic from the United Kingdom. Patrick French was married to Meru Gokhale.

His wife Meru Gokhale is the former Editor in Chief at Penguin Random House India, and she is the daughter of author and publisher Namita Gokhale.
Patrick French died in London after a four-year battle with cancer, according to his family. His death was announced on 16 March 2023.
Patrick French is the author of several books, including Younghusband: The Last Great Imperial Adventurer (1994), a biography of Francis Younghusband; The World Is What It Is (2008).

In July 2017, he was named the first Dean of Ahmedabad University’s School of Arts and Sciences.
He also received the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, the Heinemann Prize from the Royal Society of Literature, and the Somerset Maugham Award.
Patrick’s book India: A Portrait, billed as “an intimate biography of 1.2 billion people,” was published in 2011.
The book tells the story of the social and economic revolutions that are reshaping India. As part of the book’s release, he also launched The India Site, a website dedicated to India.
