Patti Smith was the eldest of four children born to Beverly Smith and Grant Smith. Her mother Beverly Smith was a jazz singer turned waitress while her father Grant Smith was a Honeywell machinist.

Patti Smith’s family was of part Irish ancestry.  Beverly Smith and Grant Smith had three other children Linda, Kimberly, and Tod.

Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America.

In 2007, Patti Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Patti Smith received an honorary doctorate degree for her contributions to popular culture at the 2008 Rowan Commencement ceremony.

Patti Smith was the subject of a 2008 documentary film by Steven Sebring, Patti Smith: Dream of Life. Smith recorded a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Words of Love” for the CD Rave on Buddy Holly which was released on June 28, 2011.

Patti Smith also recorded the song “Capitol Letter” for the official soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In 2012, Patti Smith recorded a cover of Io come persona by Italian singer-songwriter Giorgio Gaber.
