In 1993, Karla Homolka struck a plea deal with prosecutors, which led to her receiving a lesser sentence in exchange for testifying against Paul Bernardo. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges related to the deaths of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy, and also to charges of drugging and sexually assaulting Tammy Homolka, her sister.
Homolka was sentenced to 12 years in prison, which was heavily criticized as being too lenient considering the nature of her involvement in the crimes. She was released from prison in 2005 after serving her full sentence.
