“A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit,” the Facebook post said.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” Reubens said in the Facebook post. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
In Tim Burton’s 1985 film “Pee-Big Wee’s Adventure,” Reubens played Pee-wee Herman, a goofy man who wore his distinctive gray suit, red bow tie, and white loafers. The plot of the film sent Pee-wee on a quest to find his stolen bike.

Following the popularity of the film, Reubens starred as Pee-wee on the Saturday morning TV show “Pee-Playhouse,” wee’s which lasted five seasons.
He was arrested in 1991 in Florida for exposing himself inside an adult movie theater. He paid a fee, but the incident forced him to put away his characteristic gray suit for over two decades.
Reubens went on to create, co-write and co-direct the series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” on CBS, where the series earned 22 Emmy Awards during its run from 1986 to 1991. Reubens was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards during his career, winning twice.
In 2010, he produced, co-wrote, and acted in a Los Angeles production of “The Pee-wee Herman Show.” The show then transferred to Broadway, where it debuted to tremendous acclaim at The Stephen Sondheim Theater.
Aside from his role as Pee-wee Herman, he appeared in a number of films and television shows, including:
- Gotham,
- What We Do In The Shadows,
- 30 Rock, and
- The Blues Brothers.
