Marlo Thomas was a guest on the television talk show Donahue in 1977, when she and host Phil Donahue fell in “love at first sight.”
On May 21, 1980, they married, and Donahue relocated from Chicago to New York City with some of his sons and daughter to live with Marlo Thomas and produce his talk show there.
Although the couple did not have kids of her own, Marlo helped raise Phil’s five children from a previous marriage.

Marlo Thomas is best known for her roles in the sitcom That Girl (1966-1971) and the children’s series Free to Be… You and Me.
She has three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Peabody Award, and has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame for her work in television.
She also won a Grammy for her children’s album Marlo Thomas and Friends: Thanks & Giving All Year Long. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
Thomas is the National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which her father, Danny Thomas, founded in 1962.
