Born January 4, 1992, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Promes started his football journey at Ajax youth team where he stayed for six years before playing one season at Haarlem and later at Twente youth team.

After playing three seasons at the Twente youth system, Promes was promoted to the main team in 2011 where he continued to play for three years.

While there, Promes had a loaned stint with the Eerste Divisie side Go Ahead Eagles for the 2012–13 season.
