Raymond Ackerman parents: Meet Gus Ackerman

Raymond Ackerman, the creator of Pick n Pay, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023. He was 92. Ackerman’s adventure began after he received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town on March 10, 1931, the day he was born.

In 1951, he began working for the Greatermans group’s Ackermans subsidiary as a trainee manager. Gus Ackerman, his father, formed this section, which Greatermans purchased in 1940.

Ackerman’s leadership abilities shined through as food retailing supermarkets began to appear in South Africa in the early 1950s. He was given the responsibility of managing Checkers, a grocery store founded by Norman Herber, chairman of Greatermans. Under his leadership, Checkers prospered.

Ackerman was in charge of 85 Checkers locations in 1966 at the age of just 35. He was, however, controversially fired from his job the following year.

At the age of 20, he began working for the Greatermans company in the Ackermans division after earning a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town. Gus Ackerman’s father had created Ackermans shortly after World War I, but the company was sold to the Greatermans group in 1940.
