American geographer, data scientist, activist, and whistleblower Rebekah Jones oversaw the group that used ArcGIS to develop Florida’s COVID-19 dashboard.

She was let go from her position in May 2020 as a result of her refusal to alter COVID-19 data. She was given whistleblower protections in May 2021 while the state looked into her claims.
Her allegations against the Department of Health were deemed to be baseless or unsupported in May 2022 by Florida’s Office of Inspector General, clearing the state health officials.

She admitted guilt to using the state’s emergency alert system without authorization on November 10, 2020, which led to a police search of her home in December 2022.

Jones openly accused the Florida health department of directing her to modify data to reduce the severity of the COVID-19 epidemic in the state; yet, later on, Jones was charged with unauthorized access to official computers.

Her research, titled “Quantifying Extreme Weather Event Impacts on the Northern Gulf Coast Using Landsat Imagery,” was published in 2015 in the Journal of Coastal Research.
From 2016 to 2018, Jones studied at Florida State University’s Department of Geography as a graduate student.
