Russian-born singer, composer, and pianist Regina Spektor eventually became a citizen of the United States. Before signing with Sire Records in 2004, she rose to prominence in the New York City music scene, particularly in the East Village’s anti-folk scene.

Her last two albums, Far and What We Seen from the Cheap Seats, both made their Billboard 200 debuts at number three. Her fourth album, Begin to Hope, received Gold certification. On the same chart, her album Remember Us to Life reached at number 23 in 2016.

Regina Spektor was born in 1980 to a musical household in Moscow, USSR. Her mother, Bella Spektor, was a music professor at a Soviet college of music and later worked as a teacher at a public elementary school in Mount Vernon, New York.
Her father, Ilya Spektor, was a photographer and an amateur musician. In one of the songs from her 2004 album Soviet Kitsch, Regina’s brother Boruch, who goes by the name of Boruch, is mentioned.

On June 11, 2019, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the day Regina Spektor Day, and on May 18, 2019, Borough President Rubén Dáz Jr. inducted her into the Bronx Walk of Fame.
In the East Village’s SideWalk Cafe, Spektor started playing in the anti-folk scene of downtown New York City. Around this time, she also sold self-published CDs and gave performances at nearby institutions.
She performed as The Strokes’ opening act on their Room on Fire tour in 2003–2004, and she later supported Kings of Leon on their European tour. This was her first countrywide tour.
In 2004, Spektor acquired a record deal with Sire Records and started appearing on TV, notably as a guest on numerous late-night talk shows.
