The boys’ parents peacefully separated when they were two years old. Their mother went to the University of Chicago to get her doctorate after the divorce. She relocated with Rex, Rob, and their older brother Jim to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she accepted a post as an administrator at the University of Toronto.
Rex grew up wanting to emulate his father, a defensive pioneer in the NFL who created the 46 defense. By the time they were six years old, Rex and Rob also knew they wanted to become coaches.
