Rio Ferdinand suggested that England manager Gareth Southgate should consider playing Bukayo Saka in the left-back position for their upcoming Euro match against Denmark.

This suggestion arises due to Luke Shaw’s uncertain availability and Kieran Trippier’s status being in question following England’s opening match against Serbia.

In the latest episode of his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand highlighted the potential defensive challenges facing England.

“If Shaw’s not fit then 100 per cent, we’re bang in trouble,” Ferdinand said. “We would have to put Saka at left-back. I’d play Saka at left-back then I would.”

Saka, who initially debuted in Arsenal’s first team as a left-back in 2018, has since evolved into a more forward position but retains his versatility.

During England’s Euro 2024 opener, he operated on the right wing, assisting Jude Bellingham’s goal and causing problems for Serbia’s left-back, Strahinja Pavlovic.

Ferdinand commended Saka’s versatility, stating, “First 45, the wing-play he showed… you know what I liked about it? He mixed it up.

“He didn’t always come inside. He went on the outside a couple of times.”
