The group of fans received strong criticism for their use of ‘blackface’ while attempting to emulate Gullit in the stands during their country’s first Euro 2024 match.
They painted their faces black, wore dreadlocks resembling his iconic hairstyle, and also had moustaches to mimic him, a practice that many view as racist.
However, Gullit appeared unfazed by the incident, stating “I actually feel honored,” as reported by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

He is a Dutch icon who achieved glory by winning the 1988 European Championship with the national team. The three fans wore replica kits from that historic team as part of their attire.
Following the criticism, however, one of the fans, Bart van de Ven, has stated his intention to ‘retire’ his ‘Rasta Ruud’ persona, as reported by DutchNews.
“Maybe I made a mistake or it’s a blind spot. The last thing I want to do is hurt people and that’s why I’ve decided to stop.
“I’ve had a lot of really nice responses as well, but clearly there is a group who feel differently,’ he said. ‘I have to respect that and listen to it. The last thing I want is for people to have a certain unpleasant association with my act.”
