Sean Wainui born 23 October 1995, was a rugby union player from New Zealand. He played center (and occasionally wing) for Bay of Plenty, the Chiefs in Super Rugby, and New Zealand’s Mori international team, the Mori All Blacks.

Sean Wainui played for Takapuna Grammar School’s first XV in 2011, 2012, and 2013. While still in high school, he was named North Harbour’s Mori Colts Senior Player of the Year in 2013.
Sean Wainui, a former Takapuna Grammar Prefect and 1st XV Captain, represented New Zealand on the international arena after representing the Champion New Zealand squad in the Under 20 Rugby World Cup in Italy. The squad defeated England 21–16 to win the championship.
Sean Wainui was signed by the Taranaki Rugby Football Union after graduating from high school. After excelling in the centre and wing positions for Taranaki, he was signed by the Super Rugby club the Crusaders in 2015.

Sean Wainui joined with the Chiefs prior to the 2018 Super Rugby season. He has made 44 appearances for the club and scored 18 tries at the end of the 2021 Super Rugby season. Wainui announced on Instagram on May 27, 2021, that he has signed with Bay of Plenty for the 2021 NPC.

What did Sean Wainui die of? Sean Wainui died on October 18, 2021, at about 7:50 a.m., when the automobile he was driving slammed into a tree near Tauranga. He was 25 years old.
UPDATE (Tuesday, October 26, 2021): Coroner Louella Dunn has said that the case is being treated as a suspected suicide.
