Sir James Hardy obituary

Sir James Gilbert Hardy OBE AASA, an acclaimed Australian winemaker, businessman, and yachtsman, was born on November 20, 1932. Beyond his proficiency in winemaking, he has achieved a great deal, including exceptional success in yachting.

Being the great-grandson of famed South Australian winemaker Thomas Hardy, James Hardy hails from a notable family. His father, Tom Mayfield Hardy, had a significant impact on his childhood.

He was born in Seacliff, South Australia. Since 1924, Tom Hardy has served as chairman and managing director of Thomas Hardy & Sons. On October 25, 1938, Tom Hardy tragically perished in a plane crash close to Mount Dandenong.

In addition to his work in the wine industry, Tom Hardy was a skilled sailor who was a member of the Royal South Australian Boat Squadron and sailed on the boat Nerida.

Brighton Primary School, St. Peter’s College, and the South Australian Institute of Technology were where James Hardy earned his schooling. After finishing his education, he worked as a share farmer in Port Vincent, South Australia, for two years.

He started off as a shipping clerk when he joined Thomas Hardy and Sons, the wine business owned by his family, in 1953. As he advanced within the organization, he held the positions of Sales Supervisor from 1957 to 1961 and Regional Director for the Eastern States of Australia.
