In 2011–12, while playing for the Leicester Tigers, he made his significant breakthrough. The big guy was unexpectedly left off of the Tongan 2011 World Cup roster despite scoring tries in the LV= Cup and English Premiership finals. Mafi left Leicester after a short period and moved back to Australia to sign a Super Rugby contract with the Western Force.
