Born on October 20, 1965, in Parma, Italy, Pioli began his own playing career for his hometown team, Parma.

He was later acquired by Juventus, where he made his Serie A debut in 1984. During his three seasons with the team, he won the league championship, the European Cup, the European Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup.

Pioli managed the youth teams of Bologna from 1999 to 2002 and Chievo between 2002–2003. He had won a championship during this time.

In 2019, Pioli was hired as the head coach of AC Milan.
