At the age of 80, Terry Holland, a legendary coach who made the Virginia men’s basketball team a formidable force on the national scene, passed away. In Charlottesville, Holland passed away on Sunday following a fight with Alzheimer’s disease that started in 2019.

“Virginia Athletics mourns the death of renowned men’s basketball coach, Terry Holland, who first showed us what Virginia basketball might be,” the university stated in a statement released on Monday. With Holland’s competitiveness and commitment to the team, Virginia basketball attained national recognition. His legacy will definitely endure.

Terry Holland was appointed as the men’s basketball team’s head coach of the University of Virginia on April 1st, 1974. During his time as coach, Ralph Sampson, the top high school basketball player in the nation, was scouted.

Later Sampson joined the Cavaliers, where he won three straight national collegiate players of the year titles. Holland also led Virginia to victories in the 1980 National Invitation Tournament, two Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year awards, and two trips to the Final Four (1981 and 1984).

Also, in 1976, he oversaw Virginia’s first of three ACC tournament victories. Holland was the most successful men’s basketball coach in school history at Virginia with a 326-173 winning record thanks to his coaching accomplishments.
