Barcelona announced that former midfielder Thiago Alcantara would be stepping down from their coaching staff on Friday, just a day before their La Liga opener against Valencia.

The news came as a surprise, as Thiago had been brought in on an interim basis by Hansi Flick to help with the team’s adaptation, especially given his familiarity with Flick’s ideas from their time together at Bayern Munich.

Hansi Flick, who had a strong relationship with Thiago since their days in Bayern Munich, expressed his gratitude and left the door open for a potential return.
“We have an excellent relationship from his time in Munich. I told him he would be an excellent coach, and he has indeed helped the team a lot. Now he needs to focus on his family and decide what he wants next,” Flick said.
Under-16 coach Arnau Blanco from La Masia will step in to fill Thiago’s role.
