Tom Conti is a Scottish actor, theatre director, and novelist.

Alfonso Conti and Mary McGoldrick were the parents of Tom Conti. His parents were hairdressers.

Tom’s father Alfonso Conti was born in San Vittore del Lazio, Frosinone, Lazio, Italy.

Alfonso migrated to Britain in the early part of the century to find work. During World War I, the Italian army – then an ally of Britain – trained him in machine gunnery and barbering.

Following the war, having settled in Paisley, near Glasgow, he opened a salon where he worked as a ladies’ hairdresser.

Alfonso Conti married his worker Scottish lady Mary McGoldrick.

After 10 years of marriage, Alfonso, together with about 4,000 people of Italian origin was interred in an Isle of Man camp during World War II. His wife Maisie eventually bribed a policeman with a suitcase containing £2,000 to secure his release.

Tom was conceived soon after his release in 1941.

Alfonso Conti died on March 17, 1961 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and Mary McGoldrick also died in 1979.
