The longtime announcer for Notre Dame football, Tony Roberts, has passed away. Throughout his broadcasting career, Roberts not only had a long-standing relationship with Notre Dame football but also called a variety of sporting events, such as the Olympics, the Open Championship in golf, the NBA, and the NFL.

The National Radio Hall of Fame inducted Roberts in 2016. He was also the 2005 recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation, which is given each year “to a sports broadcaster who has had a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football…with direct ties to colleges and universities.”

At a small-town radio station in Iowa, Roberts’ broadcasting career had its start in 1957. He eventually settled in Washington, D.C. after brief stints in other areas, and in 1979 he transitioned to a network position.
