Tucker was born on May 16, 1969, in Mission District of San Francisco, California as the elder son of artist and San Francisco native Lisa McNear and Dick Carlson. His father is a former American journalist, diplomat and lobbyist who was the director of the Voice of America during the last six years of the Cold War.
