In Ukraine, Viktor Medvedchuk is considered an ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, whom Medvedchuck has referred to as a personal friend. Some foreign commentators have also called him Putin’s closest ally in Ukraine.
Between 2002 and 2005, Medvedchuk served as chief of staff to the former Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma.
