The 45-cap Welsh prop, a pivotal figure in Scarlets’ lineup, had been diligently working towards a return to full fitness, but the Scarlets announced today that the 2019 Grand Slam winner has ultimately chosen to hang up his boots.

Lee’s illustrious twelve-year career included 164 appearances for the Scarlets, with notable achievements such as securing the Pro14 title in 2017. Making his debut in 2012 at the age of 19, Lee quickly established himself as a force in Welsh rugby. His international debut for Wales came a year later against Argentina, and he earned his 45th cap in November 2020 against England.

Expressing the challenges of the past 18 months, Lee commented on his retirement, stating, “It has been a difficult 18 months. I have worked hard to try and get back playing again, but the Achilles hasn’t recovered as we all hoped it would.”

“I feel as though I still had a lot to offer, both with the Scarlets and Wales, but I’m hugely proud, as a Llanelli boy, that I have been able to represent my home town, wearing the Scarlets jersey 164 times and also play for my country on the biggest stage.”

Lee highlighted some of the highs of his career, including his debut at 19, significant victories in European competitions, and the memorable PRO12 title win in Dublin. Despite facing challenges from serious injuries, he expressed gratitude for the experience and looked forward to witnessing the development of young talent, particularly in the front row.

“I’d like to thank my family and friends, players, coaches, and all the staff who have made it such a brilliant experience over the last 12 years and, of course, the fans, who turn up week in week out and give us such incredible support. Thank you all.”

Scarlets’ Director of Rugby, Dwayne Peel, acknowledged the sad news, emphasizing Lee’s significant contributions to the club. “Samson has been a big part of this club for a long time and a real character and leader within the group,” said Peel. “He should be immensely proud of what he achieved for this club, one of our finest ever tight-head props and a player who gave his all for the jersey every time he played.”
