Upon finishing high school, he proceeded to the University of Arkansas, where he studied Physical Education.

As an undergraduate, Ronnie formed his first band, the Hawks, and the band performed across Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

Hawkins further established and the Rockwood Club which he ran in Fayetteville.

The Rockwood club attracted veteran rock and roll artistes such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Conway Twitty.

Ronnie died on May 29, 2022, at age 87.
