Triple H was King of the Ring in 1997 – Triple H was set to win the 1996 King of the Ring competition, a title many wrestlers have used to launch their careers. He did not, however, win it. One embrace cost him the King of the Ring tournament in 1996.

Triple H was scheduled to win King of the Ring 1996, but he was punished prior to the PPV event for acting inappropriately during a house show, which became known as the MSG Incident.
During the 1996 event at Madison Square Garden, a heelish Hunter Hearst Helmsley faced off against Razor Ramon, a face, early in the night. Later, in a steel cage, HBK, a face, faced Diesel, another heel.

Ramon and Helmsley came down to congratulate their other buddies after the game, which is against narratives, faces, and heels.
Because this would be Hall and Nash’s final WWE encounter, all four members stood in the ring after the bout, hugging and raising their arms up for the fans.
The Chairman was enraged by the out-of-character hugs, so he gave Stone Cold the green light to win the 1996 King of the Ring tournament.
The following year, 1997, Triple H won the King of the Ring.
