Hiram Ulysses Grant, well known as Ulysses S. Grant, was an American politician and military officer who served as the country’s 18th president from 1869 to 1877. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822, and died on July 23, 1885.

Was Ulysses S. Grant a Confederate soldier?
In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant commanded the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant then served for a short time as Secretary of War.

Grant put a lot of trust in his capable secretary of state, Hamilton Fish. Grant was a fervent supporter of the Monroe Doctrine and fundamentally had the need to expand American influence abroad. Fish and Grant were friendly but reserved with one another.
Due to a deficiency in law enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border, Fish had to deal with Indian raids at the end of Grant’s second term. Under William Evarts, Fish’s successor, the issue would get worse throughout the Hayes presidency.
