Wendy Richard was an English actress, known for her excellent performance in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? as well as, on the soap opera EastEnders.

Wendy Richard was born on July 20, 1943, in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom to parents Beatrice Reay Cutter and Henry William Emerton. Her parents, Henry and Beatrice Reay Cutter Emerton ran the Corporation Hotel in the town.

Wendy Richard’s father committed suicide in December 1954 while her mother Beatrice later died of liver cancer in May 1972. She schooled at the Royal Masonic School for Girls at Rickmansworth and proceeded to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London.

Wendy Richard rose to fame for her television roles as Miss Shirley Brahms on the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? from 1972 to 1985, and Pauline Fowler on the soap opera EastEnders from 1985 to 2006.

Wendy Richard has also made appearances in Bulldog Breed, Danger Man, No Hiding Place, Hugh and I and The Contact, Doctor in Clover (1966), The Newcomers, Dad’s Army, Up Pompeii!, Please Sir!, On the Buses, Both Ends Meet, Carry On Matron (1972) and Carry On Girls (1973).

Wendy Richard was also in No Blade of Grass (1970), Gumshoe (1971), Bless This House (1972), The Fenn Street Gang, Z Cars, Bowler, Hogg’s Back and Not On Your Nellie. She was awarded a British Soap Award for ‘Special Achievement’ for her role in EastEnders in 2007.

Wendy Richard Cause Of Death

Wendy Richard passed away on February 26, 2009, at a clinic in Harley Street, London, the United Kingdom from breast cancer at the age of 65. She is buried at East Finchley Cemetery and Crematorium, East Finchley, London. Wendy Richard was earlier diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, with the disease returning in 2002 and 2008.
