A long-distance runner from Kenya, Abraham Kiptum was born on September 15, 1989 in Nandi County. On April 26, 2019, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced that Kiptum has been provisionally suspended for violating the IAAF Anti-Doping Rules regarding an athlete Biological Passport (ABP).

As a result of the suspension, Kiptum opted out of the 2019 London Marathon. An official four-year suspension and result expungement were confirmed on November 11 of that year.

He came in second place, 2 minutes and 16 seconds after Marius Kipserem, at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Marathon on December 7, 2018. His time from the 2017 Amsterdam Marathon was improved by 70 seconds. At the Rabat Marathon in 2015, Kiptum made his marathon debut and finished third with a time of 2:11:36.
