The martial artist started learning Taekwondo when he was five years old in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her first belt, a junior black belt called a poom belt, when she was nine years old. She continued to train in martial arts such Duke Roufus while in high school, in addition to karate, jiu-jitsu, and kickboxing. She began competing in MMA matches in 2010 as an amateur.
