Jay Z was born on December 4, 1969, under the name Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents are Adnis Reeves and Gloria Carter. He was raised from childhood by his mother after their father abandoned the family.
Jay Z attended Whitney High School, George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School, and then Trenton Central High School along with other now prominent rappers.
Jay Z began music by hitting kitchen tables along with his siblings until she bought him a boombox which led to his early freestyles under the name, Jazzy. He began his musical career in the late 1980s and released his debut studio album Reasonable Doubt in 1996.
