Taggart was selected to the first team all-state and all-conference as a senior at Manatee High School in Bradenton, Florida when he led the Hurricanes to the state 5A Championship game.

Taggart became the outstanding quarterback for the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Hilltoppers from 1995 to 1998 after graduating from high school.

In each of his final two collegiate seasons, Willie Taggart was a finalist for the coveted Walter Payton Award, which is given annually to the finest offensive player in I-AA football.

The first African-American to be named head coach at one of the four institutions was Willie Taggart.

For his accomplishments both on and off the field, Taggart received numerous bonuses in addition to his base salary of $750,000.
