Melchor Gastón Ferrer was born on August 25, 1917, in Elberon, Long Branch, New Jersey, United States. He is of Spanish and Irish descent.

Mel Ferrer’s father, Dr José María Ferrer was an authority on pneumonia and served as chief of staff of St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, while his mother, Mary Matilda Irene O’Donohue; came from a family of prominent Roman Catholics.

Mel Ferrer was raised alongside three siblings. His elder sister, Dr María Irené Ferrer was a cardiologist and educator and his brother, Dr Jose M. Ferrer was a surgeon. Their younger sister, Teresa Ferrer was the religion editor of The New York Herald Tribune and an education editor for Newsweek.

Mel Ferrer schooled at the Bovée School in New York and Canterbury Prep School in Connecticut. He later attended Princeton University but eventually dropped out to pursue acting.

Mel Ferrer rose to prominence on Broadway and later made more breakthroughs through films including Scaramouche, Lili and Knights of the Round Table, The Antichrist (1974), The Suspicious Death of a Minor (1975), The Black Corsair (1976), and Nightmare City (1980).

Mel Ferrer passed away at the age of 90 following a heart failure at a convalescent home in Santa Barbara, California on June 2, 2008.
