Billy Bob Thornton was born on August 4, 1955, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to a mixed family. Virginia Roberta, his mother, claimed to have psychic skills, while his father, William Raymond “Billy Ray” Thornton, worked as a high school history teacher and basketball coach until his death in August 1974. Billy Bob also had two brothers, Jimmy Don, and John David.

Thornton grew up in a nomadic family, moving about Arkansas, and living in towns like Alpine, Malvern, and Mount Holly. He was raised in a small shack without electricity or plumbing in a Methodist family.
After graduating from Malvern High School in 1973, he exhibited his baseball talent by trying out for the Kansas City Royals, but an injury forced him to leave the organization.

Following that, he briefly worked for the Arkansas State Transportation Department before enrolling at Henderson State University to study psychology. He did, however, drop out after two semesters.

Thornton moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s to pursue an acting career, which proved difficult. While pursuing acting chances, he worked odd jobs such as telemarketing, offshore wind farming, and fast food management. Thornton also demonstrated his musical abilities by playing the drums and singing with the South African rock band Jack Hammer.
