Thornton grew up in a nomadic family, moving about Arkansas, and living in towns like Alpine, Malvern, and Mount Holly. He was raised in a small shack without electricity or plumbing in a Methodist family.

After graduating from Malvern High School in 1973, he exhibited his baseball talent by trying out for the Kansas City Royals, but an injury forced him to leave the organization.

Following that, he briefly worked for the Arkansas State Transportation Department before enrolling at Henderson State University to study psychology. He did, however, drop out after two semesters.
