A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Finney-Smith attended I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he played high school basketball, graduating in 2011.
He played collegiate basketball for Virginia Tech and Florida.
After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft, Finney-Smith signed with the Dallas Mavericks on July 8, 2016, and joined the team for the 2016 NBA Summer League.
After seven seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, he was traded to the Nets in February 2023.
