John Lennon was born John Winston Ono Lennon on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, the United Kingdom at Liverpool Maternity Hospital to Julia Stanley and Alfred Lennon.

John Lennon’s father Alfred was a merchant seaman of Irish descent. He rose to worldwide fame as the founder, co-songwriter, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles.

John Lennon had 25 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His best-selling album, Double Fantasy, won the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and in 1982, he won the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

John Lennon had been voted eighth in a BBC history poll of the 100 Greatest Britons in the year 2002. He was ranked by Rolling Stone as the fifth-greatest singer and thirty-eighth greatest artist of all time.
